• mechanical: A reciprocating piston pump gives a pulsing flow and strong vibration. A pump that pushes fluid with a spinning impeller gives a smooth, quiet flow.
• electronics: Fast signals reflect at right-angle corners in circuit-board traces. Rounding or mitering the corners reduces the reflections.
• medical: Heavy medical equipment on fixed wheels is hard to turn in a small ward. Ball-shaped wheels that roll in every direction let it turn on the spot.
• everyday: Square corners where a bath meets the wall collect grime and hurt when bumped. Curving the corners makes them easy to clean and safer.
