1. Let the object or its surroundings adjust at each stage so it is always at its best
2. Divide the object into parts that can move relative to each other
3. Make something that was fixed movable or adjustable
4. Turn a rigid object into a flexible one

Ứng dụng theo lĩnh vực

• mechanical: A wing needs high lift for take-off and landing but low drag in cruise. Flaps that extend and retract at the trailing edge change the wing's shape for each phase of flight.
• software: With a fixed number of servers, the service slows at peak times and wastes money when quiet. Adding and removing servers automatically with the load keeps both cases right.
• medical: A straight endoscope cannot see around bends inside the body. With its tip divided into segments that bend against each other, it can follow narrow, curved passages.
• everyday: A straight, rigid straw did not suit every cup or posture. A pleated neck that bends lets one straw work at many angles.
