1. Move from a single line to layers, or from 1-D to 2-D or 3-D movement
2. Tilt the object or lay it on its side
3. Use the reverse side or a neighbouring face of the object

Ứng dụng theo lĩnh vực

• electronics: Adding storage cells side by side makes the chip larger. Stacking cells in dozens of vertical layers holds more in the same area.
• medical: In a patient with severe lung injury lying on their back, the rear part of the lungs gets little air. Turning the patient face down spreads the air more evenly through the lungs.
• mechanical: Long stock laid flat takes up floor space and is hard to pull out. Vertical racks store it on end, holding more in a small area and releasing one piece at a time.
• everyday: A floor mat used to be thrown out once one face wore. Making both faces usable lets it be flipped and used again.
