1. Replace a continuous action with a periodic pulsed action
2. If it is already periodic, change its frequency
3. Use the pauses between pulses to do something else

• software: Retrying failed requests at a fixed interval keeps an overloaded server from recovering. Growing the gap between retries eases the load and gives it room to recover.
• mechanical: Drilling a deep hole in one continuous pass packs chips in and snaps the tool. Drilling a little, withdrawing and repeating clears the chips each time.
• medical: Patients who lie still for long are at risk of blood pooling and clotting in the leg veins. Cuffs that inflate and deflate in cycles squeeze the legs and keep blood moving.
• electronics: Several devices struggle to share one line. Time is split into short slots, and while one device pauses the others take their turns.
