2. Combine one harmful factor with another so they cancel
3. Amplify a harmful factor until it stops being harmful

• Cogeneration that turns waste heat into electricity
• A plant that burns waste as fuel
• A backfire set to stop a wildfire

Ứng dụng theo lĩnh vực

• mechanical: Braking throws a vehicle's kinetic energy away as heat. Running the motor as a generator while slowing puts that energy back into the battery.
• software: Random break-in attempts are a burden. A deliberately weak-looking decoy server lets defenders watch the attacks and learn from them.
• materials: Treating acidic and alkaline waste water separately takes a lot of neutralizing chemicals. Mixing the two so they neutralize each other cuts the chemicals sharply.
• medical: A venom is harmful but strongly changes a particular body function. The compound behind that effect is found and refined into a medicine.
