• A coating that heals its own scratches
• A street lamp powered by its own solar panel

Ứng dụng theo lĩnh vực

• software: When a server program hangs, the service is down until someone notices and restarts it. A separate watchdog process that keeps checking the program's health restarts it automatically when something is wrong.
• mechanical: Bearings needed oiling by hand at intervals. A bearing made of porous metal soaked in oil releases its own lubricant as it turns.
• electronics: Wiring or battery-powering every sensor is impractical. Harvesting power from nearby vibration or temperature differences lets each sensor run by itself.
• everyday: Scrubbing baked-on grease from an oven is a chore. An oven that heats itself very high turns the residue to ash, which just wipes away.
