• software: Warnings get lost among other log lines. Coloring them by severity makes them stand out at a glance.
• medical: During surgery, the border between tumor and healthy tissue is hard to see. A fluorescent agent that binds to the tumor lights it up under a special light.
• mechanical: Fine cracks in a metal surface are hard to see. A penetrating dye is applied and wiped off, and a developer then shows color only where the cracks are.
• everyday: Covering a window needs curtains or blinds. Glass whose transparency changes with a switch gives privacy at the flick of a switch.
