Ví dụ

• A multistage rocket dropping empty stages
• A capsule that dissolves once the drug is released
• A mechanical pencil that feeds fresh lead as it wears

Ứng dụng theo lĩnh vực

• medical: Removing internal stitches would mean another operation. Sutures that dissolve in the body over time need no removal.
• software: Data no longer in use piles up in memory and slows the program. Unused data is cleared away automatically while it runs.
• mechanical: A grinding wheel that clogs and dulls used to need the machine stopped for dressing. Dressing the wheel lightly and continuously during grinding keeps it sharp.
• materials: A casting with a complex interior makes the core hard to pull out. The core is made of sand or wax and broken out or melted away after casting.
