mechanical: Metal brake discs are heavy and limited at high temperature. Discs of carbon fiber combined with ceramic hold up at high temperature and weigh less.
medical: A metal implant is so much stiffer than bone that it takes the load and the surrounding bone weakens. A fiber-reinforced composite with bone-like stiffness is used instead.
electronics: A metal board sheds heat well but conducts electricity, so circuits cannot sit on it. A metal plate with a thin insulating layer on top does both.
everyday: Plain paper cartons go soggy and let in light and air. Cartons made of paper laminated with thin plastic and aluminum layers keep them out.
