electronics: Bearings for a fast shaft wear and heat up from friction. Holding the shaft up with magnetic force lets it spin without contact.
medical: A bedridden patient's weight presses on a few spots and damages the skin. A mattress filled with air or water supports the body and spreads the pressure.
everyday: A tired or unconscious person in the water tends to sink. A vest made of buoyant material holds them up at the surface.
